With a little over two weeks before the start of the high school football season the Bridge City Cardinals are looking for an opponent to play in the sixth week of the season. Coach Dwayne DuBois said he is not happy about Brock High School the defending champions in Class 3A, Division I dropping out in Week 6, however, he added the Cardinals will make the most of the situation.
It can go either way. Coach DuBois does not like the idea of sitting out two weeks which breaks the rhythm he tries to establish for the team. The second year coach puts a positive light on the situation in that it will give the Cardinals extra time to heal up from bumps and bruises in the middle of the season prior to district play.
The West Orange-Stark Mustangs were in a similar situation of trying to find opponents after many had already secured their schedule. WOS added unlikely opponents Kipp Academy and state ranked Kennedale to complete their 10 teams.
The coach is still looking around the state for an opponent or the Cardinals may have an intra-squad scrimmage. Coach DuBois concludes, “Our kids will compete in practice so it’s not like we’re going to get two weeks off, and they’ll be ready when it’s time to play again.”
As it stands now, Bridge City has a BYE on September 23 followed by an OPEN week on September 30. The Cardinals then begin District 10-4A action on October 7 with the Cleveland Indians at Larry B. Ward Stadium in Bridge City which will also be homecoming.
The Cards scrimmage Buna/Kelly at home Aug. 12 and will travel to Kirbyville Aug. 18.
