For a second straight season the Bridge City Cardinals under Coach Larry Sterling made the playoffs last year. Sterling will have a good mix of returning lettermen and newcomers coming up to the varsity for this year’s Bridge City basketball team.
A couple of three-year lettermen will be the key leaders for the Cardinals on this year’s team. Hunter Wiegreffe was an all-district performer for Bridge City last season. Chason Burch will play guard again in this his third year on the varsity for the Cardinals.
Another all-district player returning for Sterling and the Cardinals is Max Baker. Also coming back to the varsity is Caleb Honeycutt. Both are just coming off the Bridge City football team and will see more time now working with the basketball squad. Sterling commented, “We’re going to lean on those guys to give us some senior leadership, we’ll also have a group of underclassmen I think that are talented coming up that should help us.”
Coach Sterling identifies some of the young men moving up to the varsity who he believes will play important minutes for the Cardinals. Sophomore Coy Bryant played as a freshman last year and is expected to contribute again for the Bridge City varsity. Three juniors are making the jump to the varsity. Colton Weeks will be at forward, Noah McFarland will also be at forward, and Zeke Champaign will see time at point guard.
The season is underway, and Sterling summarized the early progress for Bridge City heading towards district. He thought all of the Cardinals’ early scrimmages against Buna, Port Neches-Groves, Hardin-Jefferson, and Vidor were competitive. Sterling advised, “Our goal obviously from day-to-day and from week-to-week is to improve and to be a tough out come district.”
With two straight trips to the playoffs the bar has been raised for Coach Sterling and the Bridge City Cardinals. He added that hopefully as the program continues to improve aspirations will grow as well. Making the playoffs for a third straight season would be good for the Cardinals this season.
Sterling stated every year his team goes into a new season wanting to win as many games as possible, have a winning record, finish high in the district race, and make a run in the playoffs. “That’s going to be our goal, is to get better each week, and we feel if we’re just doing that by concentrating on getting better each day those other things will fall into place for us,” Sterling concluded.
