The Bobcat Express derailed last week as Orangefield lost to Kirbyville. Coach Josh Smalley hopes the Bobcats will rebound this Friday night against the Beaumont Kelly Bulldogs.
Coach Smalley looks at how the Bulldogs line up on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Smalley analyzes that Kelly runs a pro style offense from the I-Formation a lot and sometimes will revert to the Spread. On defense the Bulldogs use a four-man front which the coach and the Bobcats have seen more these days. Kelly likes to blitz linebackers and after watching the film of the Kirbyville game the Bulldogs will probably blitz even more since it gave the Bobcats some problems in that game Smalley admits.
The Kelly offense starts with Connor Quinn at quarterback who has started the last two or three seasons. The Bulldogs have two big linebackers to anchor the defense. Coach Smalley says they are a good team, they are 2-0, so the Bulldogs are enthusiastic, and will be a real big challenge for the Bobcats.
This will be the first road game for Orangefield, and Smalley analyzes the preparations needed for the Bobcats to get back on the winning track at Kelly. Smalley points out the first game away from the friendly confines of F. L. McClain Stadium will take some adjustments for the young Bobcats as will coming off their first loss of the season. Penalties and mistakes on specialty teams hurt Orangefield last week, so Smalley and his coaches are working on correcting those things this week as well as defending the pass better since the Bulldogs like to throw the football. Smalley predicts if the Bobcats improve in those areas he thinks they’re going to be okay.
Orangefield is looking for a win Friday night according to Coach Smalley, but the ultimate goal is to have the Bobcats ready for the start of district action. Smalley comments that Orangefield wants to win the first six games and they are important, but the aim is to be clicking on all cylinders when the Bobcats hit district.
The Bobcats will be back home next week to host Lumberton in the KOGT Game of the Week.
