Coming into Friday night the Orangefield Bobcats were on a three-game losing streak. Appearing to rewind the game video the Bobcats played like they did in the season opener and convincingly won 52-0 over the Beaumont Kelly Bulldogs at F. L. McClain Stadium.
The victory was all the sweeter as it was homecoming for Orangefield on Friday night. Paris Fregia was announced as the Homecoming Queen during the halftime of the game.
Minus their starting quarterback Caleb Kress because of an injury the Bobcats still piled up 403 yards rushing and 18 first downs on the ground. Orangefield (2-3) did not throw a pass on the night.
Injuries caused several Bobcats to see more playing time including junior Dylan Williams. He played in the defensive secondary where he intercepted a Bulldog pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown. Williams ran the ball six times for 33 yards and two more scores.
Sophomore Mason Gonzales got his first varsity start at quarterback and responded like an old pro. Gonzales carried the ball 10 times for 87 yards and two touchdowns including a brilliant 57-yard keeper on the first play from scrimmage in the second half.
The Bobcat tailbacks were sensational. Christian Louvier who spelled the injured Kress in the defensive secondary had five rushes all in the first half for 98 yards which included a 47-yard sweep around right end for a touchdown. Wesley Frillou saw his first action in three weeks because of an injury. Frillou was the Bobcats’ leading rusher with five carries for 105 yards all in the first half as well. He contributed a 61-yard touchdown run.
On defense Orangefield was solid yielding just four first downs and only 31 total yards to the Bulldogs in the game. Kelly (0-5) was hampered by several poor snaps from shotgun formation that resulted in losses totaling 75 yards. The Bobcats also had two interceptions as Andrew Hoyland and Williams both picked off Bulldog passes.
Next week the Orangefield Bobcats must go on the road to play Diboll. The kickoff is at 7:30 on Friday night. Beaumont Kelly plays at home next Friday night against the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns.
