LC-M receiver Keegan Sonnier (82) hauls in a reception for a 17-yard gain and a first down during Friday’s game against Huffman. The Bears defeated the Falcons, 41-26, in a key District 10-4A Division 1 matchup.
A fourth quarter defensive stop followed by an 88-yard touchdown drive on Friday night. have kept the Bears playoff hopes alive heading into the home stretch of the season.
The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears defeated Huffman, 41-26, on Friday at Falcon Stadium in Huffman to keep the Bears chances for a spot in the Class 4A Division 1 playoffs alive for another week.
In the late third quarter, the Bears watched a 21-point lead over the Falcons evaporate as Huffman scored on back-to-back drives to cut the LC-M lead to 27-20 and were threatening again midway through the fourth quarter. Facing a fourth down and four at the Bears 12 yard line, Huffman quarterback Dylan Lorfing’s pass fell incomplete giving LC-M the ball and a chance to breathe a sigh of relief.
The LC-M offense then flexed its collective muscle and had its most impressive and important drive of the game as the Bears marched the ball 88-yards, while chewing up nearly five minutes of the clock, as running back Christopher Winters darted into the end zone from the 10 yard line with 3:38 left in the game and a 34-20 lead.
Bears defensive back Ronald Guillory put LC-M on the scoreboard first with a 60-yard interception return for a touchdown to give LC-M a 7-0 lead it would never relinquish.
Winters, who led all ballcarriers with 156 yards rushing on 21 totes, scored his first of two touchdowns on the night with dazzling 37-yard jaunt early in the second quarter.
Huffman responded on its next possession with a speedy 2:42 drive covering 54 yards as running back Camron McMahan hauled in a 5-yard swing pass from Lorfing to cut the lead to 13-6.
The Bears next possession may not have a thing of beauty, but it was impressive as LC-M converted three fourth-down conversions during the drive. Facing fourth and goal at the Falcons 7-yard line, Bickham dropped back and connected with Adam Pope in the end zone for a 21-6 lead at the break.
The LC-M defense, which had three sacks of Lorfing on the night, held Huffman on its first possession of the second-half and gave the Bears offense a short field to work with, and the offense capitalized on the opportunity as Bickham hit a wide-open Guillory sprinting alone down the middle of the field for a 35-yard scoring strike and 27-6 lead.
Just when it looked like the Bears would run away with this game, the Falcons came storming back and scored two touchdowns in the span of 2:51 and nearly added a third early in the fourth quarter.
Huffman marched the ball 64 yards in exactly 4 minutes as McMahan capped off the drive with a four yard run through the middle and another another touchdown on the next drive, following a three-and-out series by LC-M, this time from the 1-yard line to narrow the Bears lead to 27-20.
On the next Falcons possession, the Bears defense held and LC-M’s offense took control at that point and tacked on the final two touchdowns for its first district win of the season.
LC-M (3-5, 1-2) return home next Friday for a game against the Cleveland Indians. Cleveland (3-5, 0-3) lost to Navasota, 37-9, on Friday night.
Huffman (4-4, 1-2) travels to Silsbee (4-4, 2-1) next Friday to face the Tigers.
