Friday night the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears open the season against a familiar opponent in the Jasper Bulldogs. Coach Randy Crouch indicates the Bears have come out of the preseason workouts and two scrimmages in pretty good shape and are ready for the Bulldogs.
Coach Crouch points out Jasper lost to graduation their star quarterback Tiger Williams who was the centerpiece of the Bulldogs’ offense last season. Previously they used primarily one back and two tight ends. With Williams’ departure Jasper has retained the dual tight ends and gone to two running backs.
Crouch analyzes that Jasper appears to be evolving into more of a Wing-T offense or at least that’s what they’ve done in the scrimmages. Instead of an offense centered on the quarterback, the Bulldogs will probably emphasize the fullback and tailback this season.
The Bulldogs are known for their aggressive, athletic defense. Crouch says Jasper uses basically an even front. He advises they will sometimes shift into an odd-man look with a five-man line during the game.
They have lost some interior defensive linemen according to Crouch. Jasper still has some pretty good linebackers, and they return their free safety that is pretty good. The Bulldogs run around well and pursue the ball. The coach confesses the Bears will have a real challenge as far as blocking them.
Coach Crouch is optimistic on LC-M’s chances entering the first week of the season. He is hopeful the Bears perform well in the first game by eliminating mistakes and controlling what they can control. Blocking and tackling the fundamentals are essential Crouch reminds. Going to Jasper is always a challenge because of the outstanding tradition there. Coach Crouch concludes, “I think that we’re up to the task.”
The LC-M Bears travel north Friday night to play the Jasper Bulldogs. The kickoff is at 7:30 PM in Jasper.
