The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears played their first game of the season last week. Coach Randy Crouch admits the Bears were greatly affected by the layoff from Harvey during the 28-14 loss to Woodville. The coaches were afraid of losing some of their players to other schools if they did not play in Week 3 of the season.
With a full week of practice under their pads now the Bears will play the Orangefield Bobcats. Crouch indicates the Bobcats have a solid running game. Orangefield runs the Slot T, and they do it very well according to Crouch. They get good quarterback play behind a big offensive line including Aaron Galitz and Luke Padilla.
The Bobcats’ experience with the Slot T means they know what they’re doing when running the football. They have dangerous runners in all the backfield positions including quarterback. Crouch stated, “We’re going to have our hands full defensively. We’re going to have to play well in the defensive line to be able to contain them.”
Coach Crouch analyzed the Orangefield defense. The Bobcats use a four-man front. Crouch thinks the D-Line is pretty good. Watching them on tape from scrimmages the Bobcats use their hands well, they can deliver a blow, and they attack the line of scrimmage.
Overall, the Bobcats are well coached on defense Crouch indicates. They run to the ball, lineup correctly, take good angles, and they don’t make a lot of mistakes. “We’ll have to play well, we’ll have to execute,” Crouch said.
Time practicing and working with the players cannot be overemphasized according to Crouch in preparation for this week’s game with the Orangefield Bobcats. Crouch pointed out more practice will help with conditioning, will help eliminate mistakes like a number of missed snaps, and keep the offense moving against the Orangefield defense. “We’ve got to do some things offensively to keep our defense off the field because Orangefield does a really good job of controlling the football and trying to make the game short. We’re going to have to do a good job when we get opportunities on offense to take advantage of them,” Coach Crouch concluded.
The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears play at Orangefield Friday night with the kickoff at 7:00. The game will be broadcast live on KOGT with the replay on Saturday morning.
