The KOGT Game of the Week between Little Cypress-Mauriceville and Orangefield turned out to be everything it was built up to be, plus a homecoming corsage.
Both teams struggled early to even make a first down. But when they figured out what would work the floodgates opened and the shootout was on. It would take a gutsy two point conversion call to push the Bears past the Bobcats in overtime 43-42 at Battlin’ Bear Stadium.
LCM (2-2) won their second straight game after changing their offense back to the spread. Quarterback Beau Bickham found a new target as new receiver, junior Katon Brown, caught three touchdown passes in the first half and finished with seven for 163 yards.
After taking a 14-0 lead the Bobcats were able to put together a score to cut the lead in half. But with just 1:33 left in the half LCM marched down the field and it was Bickham to Brown again to make the halftime score 21-7.
The Bobcats played catch up all night but they never gave up despite losing their QB Caleb Kress to injury and running backs Christopher McGee and Christian Louvier hobbled around most of the night. And back Wesley Frillou didn’t suit up because of injury.
LCM answered each OF score in the second half until the Bobcats scored off a turnover and looked at tying the game at 28 with the point after. But the snap went through Mason Gonzalez’ hands and the attempt was never made, keeping the score 28-27.
The Bears would score to go up 35-27 and when the Bobcats got the ball back, they put together an impressive drive to score. But before the two point conversion to tie, OF was called for a penalty, increasing OF’s chances for failure. But Gonzalez responded with a strike to Hunter Evans in the end zone to tie the game at 35.
Using short passes to Brown and runs by Chris Winters and J’Lon Douglas, the Bears got the ball downfield and had a 22 yard field goal attempt with 4 seconds left for the win but the kick was off, sending the game into overtime.
The Bobcats scored first in OT and took a 42-35 lead. The Bears got the ball and converted a fourth down play before Winters took it in for the score. But instead of going into a second overtime with a PAT, Coach Randy Crouch called for a 2 point play and Winters barely got to the end zone off the right side to send the home crowd into a frenzy after the one point victory.
LCM is off next week and OF (1-3) will host Kelly for Homecoming.
