The first half of district action concluded Friday night. The Orangefield Bobcats were on a two-game winning streak and enjoyed the home court. The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears were coming off a big win against cross-town rival West Orange-Stark. The Bears rode the shooting and rebounding of Katon Brown to leave the Bobcat Gym with a 55-43 victory.
Brown scored the first basket of the game and tallied at least two baskets in every quarter to finish the night as the high scorer in the contest with 20 points. Many of Katon’s points came on put backs after snatching rebounds of his own and teammates’ missed shots.
Also helping LC-M to jump out to a quick lead were Keegan Sonnier and Cameron Parker. Sonnier hit two 3-point baskets late in the first quarter to give the Bears a 14-4 advantage after the first eight minutes. Parker then nailed another three 45 seconds into the second quarter to put LC-M up 17-4.
The Bobcats after falling behind early managed to rally using some hot 3-point shooting as well. Payton and Aven Lathrop combined for three treys in the second quarter. Zach Dischler sank a 3-pointer with two minutes left before halftime to cut the Bears’ lead to 25-21.
The Bears had an answer for Orangefield’s hot shooting and got two beautiful baskets to close out the scoring in the first half. First Ayson Simmons drove the lane and made a fake that had his Bobcat defender going one way while he went the other for an uncontested layup. Andrew Daspit took a nifty pass from Cameron Parker to make a layup from almost behind the basket that gave LC-M a 31-23 lead going to the locker room.
Parker hit two threes in the third and Sonnier hit his third three of the game in the same quarter. Little Cypress-Mauriceville (3-3) opened up its largest lead of the game 44-30 with just one quarter to play. Parker and Sonnier joined Brown in double figures with 12 and 11 points respectively.
Orangefield (2-4) got 15 points from Aven Lathrop off the bench. Alex Catt hit double digits with 10 points which included a three-point play and a 3-point basket.
The second half of district play starts next Tuesday and all four Orange County teams are battling for the third and fourth seeds in the district to earn a berth in the playoffs. Orangefield must travel to Silsbee to play the tough Tigers on Tuesday. Little Cypress-Mauriceville will be in the Bear Cave Tuesday night against the last place Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns. -Dan Perrine, KOGT-
