Following an open week the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears are getting prepared for their final non-district game. Coach Randy Crouch explains the decision for the Bears to go back to the Spread Offense which has resulted in back-to-back wins. He indicates a review of what the Bears were doing and their personnel led to the changing back to the Spread. Crouch concludes the coaching staff revaluated the LC-M offense and thinks this is a better fit.
LC-M travels this week to Houston to play the St. Pius Panthers. According to Crouch they have an outstanding team, one of the top teams in the greater Houston area. The Panthers run the Spread Offense also. They throw the ball around the field using the arm of quarterback Grant Gunnell. At 6-foot-6 Gunnell can see downfield very well to see his excellent corps of receivers. Crouch admits, “It’ll be a huge challenge for us.”
The Panthers are averaging 50 points a game on offense, and Coach Crouch adds their defense is not bad either. St. Pius is a multiple scheme team on defense. Its defensive line is very good with a strong group of downed linemen. The Panthers’ linebackers are also top quality. Crouch confesses he doesn’t see many weaknesses with them on defense.
St. Pius comes into the game undefeated. This game on the schedule was a late addition that Coach Crouch had to find when the University Interscholastic League pulled the Livingston Lions from District 10-4A Division I and put them in a higher classification District 22-5A.
As the last game before the start of district for the Bears, Crouch thinks this will be good preparation for LC-M heading into the district games in two weeks. Crouch points out several teams in the Bears’ district run the Spread so it will help them see it from the likes of a top team like St. Pius. The coach emphasizes LC-M must do a better job of blocking on offense and lineup better while tackling better on defense in the team’s final tune up before district starts a week from this coming Friday.
Friday night the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears play on the road at Houston St. Pius. The kickoff will be at 7:00 PM.
