New Head Coach Dwayne DuBois did not waste any time celebrating his first win at this alma mater as the Bridge City Cardinals upset the Kirbyville Wildcats last week. DuBois gives credit to the Cardinals for playing hard and battling the entire game.
This week is another battle as Bridge City plays the state ranked Newton Eagles. Coach DuBois believes the Eagles are almost a carbon copy of the Kirbyville Wildcats and that means the Cardinals need to repeat their performance from Week 1. DuBois says the Eagles are very explosive on offense and use unbalanced formations to try to get opposing defenses out of position. He admits you cannot really stop Newton’s excellent group of fast running backs, you try to slow them down and dictate the pace of the game by keeping those explosive kids off the field.
Keeping the Newton offense off the field obviously figures heavily in Coach DuBois’ strategy. The Coach believes his son and quarterback Camden DuBois along with the offensive line are coming together to make the new offense work. DuBois sees the offense starting up front with the linemen, and the better they get the better the Cardinals will be at controlling the tempo of the game. He feels Camden starting his third year at quarterback and having worked in the offense for six years has a calming influence on the other offensive players and almost serves like another coach on the field directing the offense. DuBois states the Cardinals are not as good now as they are going to be, and he is excited about how things are going.
Keys to the game are the Cardinals playing good sound defense and controlling the ball on offense. Not to be overlooked is the kicking game which was a key to winning the game last week according to DuBois. It is a third part of the game which Bridge City devotes plenty of time during practices. Coach DuBois gives credit to the Cardinals’ sophomore kicker Alfie Heraldes for his clutch kick to beat Kirbyville as well as the long snapper, offensive line, and the holder doing their jobs on the game winner. The coach promises Bridge City will never overlook that aspect of the ball game.
The Bridge City Cardinals play the Newton Eagles at Larry B. Ward Stadium on Friday night and live on KOGT.
