The Bridge City Cardinals finished undefeated in district to finish in first place. Coach Dwayne DuBois believes the Cardinals are playing their best football of the season, but could still improve. Bridge City’s focus in the Huffman game last week was its best of the season according to the coach. DuBois leaves it up to the coaching staff to make the Cardinals better, and he anticipates seeing improvement from the players this upcoming week.
This week is the opening round of the playoffs, and Bridge City will play Center. DuBois says he is familiar with the Roughriders from when he played against them while coaching at Hardin-Jefferson. The Roughriders are explosive offensively running the Spread Offense.
Two starters from that Center team DuBois faced two years ago still starring for Center are quarterback Kyle Parks and wide receiver Octavious Evans. The Roughriders are led by Parks who passed for over 2,000 yards and ran the ball for almost 1200 yards last season. Evans caught 76 passes for 1,016 yards and nine touchdowns. DuBois adds Jacarios Hall will also carry the football out of the backfield.
The Roughriders are very athletic on defense. They base out of a 4-2-5 look and are a solid defensive club. Coach DuBois points out Evans is also a leader defensively from his safety position. He is very fast and a playmaker on defense too. Center’s linebackers are active and its front defensive line is very solid. DuBois indicates, “We’re going to have to sustain our blocks and get after them and play all the way to the whistle to be able to move the ball like we’ve been moving it.”
The Cardinals are a number one seed against the fourth seeded Center. DuBois knows it will still take a full team effort to win in the playoffs. He is challenging the defense to have a good game much like it did against Huffman for most of that contest. DuBois reminds like very week Bridge City needs to control the clock on offense, keep the Lions’ offense off the field, protect the football with no turnovers, and win the special teams battle which the Cardinals have been doing in the district games. “What we’ve got to do is come out and maintain our focus and be disciplined like we have the last few weeks and I think we’ll be fine,” Coach DuBois concludes.
The Bridge City Cardinals meet the Center Roughriders in the Bi-District round of the playoffs. The kickoff is Friday night at 7:30 in Splendora on KOGT.
