Congratulations to those players who have been selected for the 2015 All-KOGT Football Team.
Some call it The Few, The Proud Team because we don’t have a Second Team or a bunch of ties, but we assure you that doesn’t make it easier to choose.
When you win a State Championship it’s no surprise that a lot of West Orange-Stark Mustangs have made the team. And on offense our team starts with quarterback Jack Dallas. Another record setting year with another year of eligibility left, which is why I won’t talk about his career yet because it’s not over. But Dallas didn’t disappoint after an incredible sophomore season.
LCM RB Sam King also repeated with another solid season for the Bears following a breakout year a season ago. The surprise of the season, only because we didn’t know him, is Bridge City’s Cayce Draper. A perfect runner for Coach Dubois’ offense that he brought to BC along with Draper when he came over from Hardin-Jefferson. Jeremiah Shaw had to share time with some talented WOS backs but by the time the playoffs got here he was the go to guy.
Being the only team that threw the ball more than 10 times a game, the Mustangs dominate at receiver with three triple threat guys. Thomas Wallace, KJ Miller and Keion Hancock can all catch the short ball, the deep ball and they can fly.
Miller also joined BC’s Zach Honeycutt as our return guys. You didn’t go get popcorn when those two were about to catch the kick.
The Hawgs, the Big Ugly’s, whatever nickname you have for them, the guys in the trenches are always the unsung heroes. But your quarterback can’t throw all of those touchdowns without protection and if you’re successful with the Wing T chances are your line is not just strong but smart too. Our line fits the bill.
Defensively it’s probably the best group of linebackers we’ve had on our team and unfortunately we had to leave a couple off that deserve to be there.
There’s the cliché’ of being “shot out of a cannon” and BC’s Derick Dearing and Justin Brown of WOS are the cannonballs. Because of their low center of gravity you may not see them when the ball is snapped, but before you could count to three they’d have the ball carrier on his back and usually gasping for air. LCM’s Bay Quebodeaux, Steven “Mr.” Tims of WOS, and OF strongman Austin Moore capped off their senior year with seasons that will have them in the conversations of “best of” all time at their respective schools.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the four guys on our defensive line gave offensive linemen nightmares. Either before the game watching film, or after the game after facing them for four quarters. It’s worth noting that Mandel King of WOS has been starting since he was a freshman which is rare, especially at WOS. If he stays healthy next season he could possibly play in 60 high school varsity games. Let us know if you know of anyone who has come close!
Our defensive backs didn’t have to defend a lot of passes, except when everybody knew it was a pass and they took center stage. More often than not, they made the play.
One of the DB’s is OF’s Mathew Watkins. Yes he’s known more for being the straw that stirs the Bobcat offense, but this guy can tackle too. If we had a Heart Award he would probably win. He never left the field and when they had to carry him off, he usually would rub mud on it or tape it up and get back out there.
Cornel Thompson is our Coach of the Year. To the victor goes the spoils. He deserves it and all the accolades that comes along with it.
A big thank you to the coaches and others who helped us select our team.
