After two days of early voting for a Tax Ratification Election, the Orangefield school district has had 22 people cast a ballot. The district is asking voters to approve a tax increase past the state maximum to help pay education costs. The state has cut payments to public schools for several years.
The proposed tax rate will go from $1.04 per $100 valuation to $1.17 cents per $100 valuation on property. The school district information says the median house in is valued at $117,000. The increase in taxes for a homeowner with homestead exemption would be $8.52 a month. Homeowners age 65 or older, and those with a disability exemption, have their taxes frozen and will not pay the increase.
Early voting will continue from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays at the administration building. The last day for early voting is Thursday, September 29. The main election will be Saturday, October 3.
