Members of the Orangefield UIL Academic Team traveled to College Station, Texas on Friday, February 24, 2017 to begin competition at the A&M Consolidated High School Invitational meet. Competition for this meet took place on both Friday and Saturday. OHS competed against 19 other schools in the small school category (1A-4A). OHS students brought home 12 individual medals and 4 team plaques. In the Computer Applications contest, Drew Worthy took 1st place and Cade Prejean took 3rd place. In the Math events, Kim Nguyen took 2nd place in Number Sense and Jennifer Tsan took 4th place in Calculator Applications. The Spelling and Vocabulary Team placed 2nd, team members were Anna VanPelt, Ronnie Elkins, Olivia Davis, and Whitney Flanigan. Katie Swiere took 2nd place in the Current Events contest with the team placing 1st. Team members for Current Events were Katie, Gabby Kearns, Hunter Gordy, and Katelynn Carpenter. The Accounting team of Kayla Boyett, Emily Havens, Christie Luong, and Zach Patronis won 1st place with Kayla placing 1st and Emily placing 2nd as individuals. Individual Journalism awards went to Ronnie Elkins 5th place Features, Allie Crouch 3rd place Editorial, and the following Headline winners, Ronnie Elkins 2nd place, Kayla Boyett 3rd place, and Allie Crouch 5th place. The Journalism students also brought home the plaque for 2nd Place Overall Team.
