Little Cypress Intermediate teacher, Brenda Looney Jones was notified recently that she is one of the Wayne A. Reaud Excellence in Education Award winners for 2016. “The award, according to the Beaumont Foundation of America, “…was created to celebrate and recognize superior contributions of teachers whose leadership and dedication inspire a spirit of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities.” Jones is one of 15 Southeast Texas educators who will be honored at an awards gala and receive, among other things, $10,000.
Ms. Jones has spent her twelve year career with the Little Cypress-Mauriceville District, at Little Cypress Elementary for 10 years and this year will complete her second at LCI. Integrating technology throughout the curriculum is one of her strong suits. Some of the highlights of her classroom this year include students creating a Lego robot, Skyping with the City Planner from New Braunfels, student postings on the classroom Twitter feed, communicating with classes in different states and occasionally getting responses from well-known education Twitter feeds like Skype, Kahoot and Wonderopolis.
Besides integrating technology into the daily life of her class, she has served as Tech Champion for the last 3 years at LCE and LCI. In this position, she is able to help other teachers integrate technology into their own lesson plans, lead workshop sessions for teachers at LCM District technology days, and serve as a presenter at Region 5 workshops, such as Mobile Mania. Somewhere in her busy schedule, she has also found the time to coach the Little Cypress Junior High Girls Track Team.
LCI Principal Michael Ridout has this to say in explaining Jones’ accomplishments. “Mrs. Jones has cemented her place as one of our foundational teachers – considered by all to be not only an excellent educator, but an extremely capable and committed team member who will willingly do whatever is needed or asked of her in order to push this campus toward success.”
