Many have compared the flooding from Harvey to the storm surge from Hurricane Ike back in 2008. Bridge City received the brunt of Ike, but was not completely spared by Harvey either.
Bridge City School Superintendent Todd Lintzen experienced his first hurricane with Harvey and had water intrude into his home. He and his wife were taken in by friends during the storm to get out of the rising water.
The schools in Bridge City were not seriously damaged by the flood. There was some minimal water that got through the space under doors or minor leaks in a few of the buildings. That has been cleaned up already according to Lintzen. “We were fortunate because of that,” Lintzen indicated.
However, just like Lintzen’s house about half the students and faculty of the Bridge City School District received flooding in their residences. Bridge City is somewhat unique in Orange County because that school district began classes the week before Harvey hit this area.
With schools back in session this week Lintzen believes Friday’s opening football game between the Bridge City Cardinals and the West Orange-Stark Mustangs will play a significant role to getting schools back in full swing. “We’re bouncing back, and we are going to move forward. That is what it’s about, students and Friday night lights, and two communities coming together,” Lintzen advised.
The Bridge City High School marching band did lose some instruments in the storm. The superintendent informed that the instruments will be replaced and the band will perform at halftime.
