The Deweyville Pirates are looking for their first district win of the season. Coach Lance Dale says this week’s opponent the Hemphill Hornets use the Spread Offense. Dale indicates the Hornets like to run zone reads, throw the bubble screen, and will throw the fade route down the field. Coach John Launius’ son Myles is just a sophomore, but is the starting quarterback for Hemphill. Dale believes Launius is a smart quarterback and his best two receivers are Chris Owens and Tommy Williams. The Hornets run a 50 Defense and their top defensive player is linebacker Darren Lowe.
Pressuring the young Hornet quarterback and establishing a strong Pirate running game are the strategies for Deweyville according to Coach Dale in the Hemphill game. Dale plans to change up and disguise his secondary coverages to try to confuse the young quarterback while also putting pressure on Launius to make him get rid of the football quicker. Dale is hoping to mask what the Pirates are doing to throw off the Hemphill coaches calling the plays on the sidelines.
On offense Coach Dale wants to just line up and pound the football. Dale is going to put the game in the offensive line’s hands and go to work on the Hornets’ defenders. The hope is the Pirates can out block them.
A district victory is the goal for both teams, and Dale looks at the keys for Deweyville to earn its first district triumph of the year. Coach Dale analyzes that the first key and the most important is the Deweyville secondary must have a good game against the Hemphill Spread passing game, secondly the Pirates must tackle well when the Hornets run the football, third the Pirates’ offensive line must have a good game blocking the Hemphill 50 Defense, and finally Deweyville has to be mentally prepared and focused to be able to go on the road to get its first district win against Hemphill. Dale concludes that he believes in the Pirates, and he knows they will be ready. – Dan Perrine, KOGT-
