The City of Pinehurst will have a slightly lower tax rate next fiscal year after approval by the City Council Tuesday night. The council approved 69.762 cents per 100 dollars value tax rate which will generate slightly less than $300 next year below what Pinehurst received in property tax this current fiscal year.
The City Council approved an amendment to the contract with Republic Services for garbage collection. Beginning October 11, Republic every Tuesday will pick up only the garbage in the carts they provide for Pinehurst citizens. In addition, Republic will pick up bulk items on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month.
Pinehurst will continue to contribute for membership in the Orange County Economic Development Corporation (EDC). Executive Director Jessica Hill gave a presentation about the EDC to the City Council and promised to provide updates to them. Pinehurst’s pays $2,820 annually to be a member of the EDC.
The bulk of Tuesday’s meeting was taken up by city workers and Pinehurst citizens praising and thanking various city employees for their outstanding efforts during the torrential rain and flooding from Tropical Storm Harvey. It was estimated by the Pinehurst Volunteer Fire Department that up to a thousand citizens were rescued in Pinehurst during Harvey.
City Administrator Robbie Hood said this was his first hurricane, and that he actually was rescued from his home because of the high water. Hood said he is very proud of all the efforts exhibited by Pinehurst. He indicated the citizens should be very thankful for what the ladies and gentlemen that work for Pinehurst did to help them. “When things are bad out there these people are at their best. I’m proud to be a part of your team,” Hood praised.
