ORANGEFIELD — The West Orange-Stark Mustangs got a season-best
performance from their quarterback, while the Orangefield Bobcats
got a sensational season-ending performance from theirs.
The Mustangs also got the victory 49-14 over the Bobcats Friday
night at F. L. McClain Stadium in the regular season finale.
West Orange-Stark (8-2, 4-1) rode the back of quarterback Reggie
Garrett to take a 21-0 lead in the second quarter, a lead which they
never surrendered. Garrett finished the night with 39 yards passing
and 141 yards rushing highlighted by five touchdowns.
“I thought our quarterback played outstanding, Reggie Garrett had
his best game ever.” Coach Dan Hooks exclaimed.
Orangefield (4-6, 1-4) faced a tenacious WO-S defense which seemed
to have the answer for most of the Bobcats multiple fakes and
options that had Orangefield leading the district in offense for
most of the season. Quarterback Corey Huckabay toted the ball 23
times for 137 yards to help him reach the 1,000-yard summit for the
season. Huckabay totaled 1,005 yards in 10 games.
After a scoreless first quarter, during which both teams turned the
ball over once, WO-S got on the scoreboard first with a seven-play
drive, all seven on the ground. The Darius duo of Darius Mitchell
and Darius Robinson each carried the football for good yardage,
Mitchell three carries for 36 yards and Robinson two carries for 10
yards. Garrett got the score on a 1-yard quarterback sneak. Justin
Sparrow made the score 7-0 with 10:28 to play in the second quarter.
Garrett scored touchdown number two just two minutes later.
Orangefield punted and the Mustangs took over at their 34-yard line.
On the first play Garrett ran a draw from the spread formation, cut
to his left, and raced down the Mustangs’ sideline 66 yards for the
score to make the score 14-0 with 8:28 to go until the half.
Another three-and-out by the Bobcats’ offense got the Mustangs the
ball back at the Orangefield 48. Five running plays would make the
score 21-0. Garrett got his third touchdown and second score from a
yard out.
The Bobcats’ offense got its first sustained drive of the night
after that score. Huckabay ran for one first down. Rylan Cook popped
a counter play for 37 yards to the WO-S 23. On third-and-11 from the
24, Huckabay faked a handoff and passed to a wide open Parker James
for the touchdown. The point-after kick was blocked by the Mustangs
and WO-S’s Brandon Forward returned the ball over 90 yards only to
be tackled at the 1 by Huckabay to keep the score 21-6 with 1:47
left in the second quarter.
The Mustangs only needed 54 seconds to counter attack. Garrett
picked up a first down on the first play, passed for 26 yards to
Shaquille Jackson on the second play, and ran 12 yards on the fourth
play for his fourth touchdown. Sparrow’s kick made the score 28-6
with 49 seconds left before the half.
The Mustangs scored on their first possession of the second half to
make the score 35-6. Mitchell set the stage gaining 36 yards on
three carries. Garrett got the six points with another 1-yard
quarterback sneak.
Orangefield’s Quinton Evans recovered a West Orange-Stark fumble on
a punt
to give the Bobcats the ball at the Mustangs’ 42. Huckabay ran 14
yards and Josh Shores burst through the middle 28 yards for the
touchdown with 6:29 to play in the third quarter. Huckabay executed
one of his finest fakes of the season on the two-point conversion as
he froze the Mustangs and waltzed around left end untouched.
It did not take long for the Mustangs to answer that score, as on
the first play following the kickoff Mitchell took a pitch from
Garrett on an option play to the left and glided down the sidelines
70 yards for the touchdown. Mitchell took rushing honors for the
night with 157 yards on 11 carries.
The only score of the fourth quarter came with 6:35 to play in the
game as the Mustangs took over on downs when the Bobcats failed to
convert a faked punt into a first down at their own 22. Stephen Cook
carried the ball three straight times for 14 yards including the
touchdown from the 3.
The Mustangs now get set for the playoffs. Coach Hooks analyzed the
Mustangs readiness for the playoffs, “I’m pretty satisfied with our
team. I thought our defense would play a little better, we gave up
too much, but offensively we moved the ball up and down the field.”
The first playoff game is next Friday at Huffman against Coldspring.
