A Stuckey’s center with shops for Baskin-Robbins ice cream, Dunkin’ Donuts and Church’s Chicken will be built at Interstate 10 and FM 1442. Orange County Precinct 2 Commissioner Barry Burton Thursday said he told people about the project after seeing that the company had posted a sign.
“There was really no official announcement,” he said.
Burton said he knows the property’s owner and the land deal had been closed about five or six weeks ago. Although he and the Orange County Economic Development Corporation Director Jessica Hill have talked with the developers, he said no deals were made and the developers chose the location.
The site has water and sewer service through the Mauriceville Municipal Utility District, Burton said. He represents the Mauriceville area on Commissioners Court.
Stuckey’s is a roadside business that dates back to the 1930s when a family began selling pecan log candy. Orange had a Stuckey’s off the interstate near FM 1136 in the early 1960s but it closed some 25 years ago.
Burton said the new Stuckey’s will be similar to the one outside of Winnie on Interstate 10.
He also said the Buccee’s corporation looked at the same site at FM 1442 a few years ago, but was lured to Baytown with an offer of free land.
