Spiders and black mold added to the demerits at the lowest-scoring food service business inspected in the latter part of June. Orange County Health Inspector James Scales went to 31 restaurants, cafeterias and food businesses during the last half of June. He gave 11 perfect scores of 100 and made two pre-opening inspections. The Donut Palace, 11258 Highway 12 in Mauriceville had the lowest score with a 78. Besides finding foods not at safe temperatures, Scales also found several spiders along a corner of the wall and ceiling. Black mold was on the wall at a sink.
The perfect scores went to West Orange-Stark Elementary School, West Orange-Stark Middle School, Oak Forest Elementary School, Vidor High School and Vidor Junior High. The schools are sites this summer for youth to get meals.
Other scores of 100 went to Star and Crescent Moon Cafe at Shangri La Gardens in Orange, Quizno’s Subs on Strickland Drive in Pinehurst, Kimbo’s Concessions on Highway 12 in Mauriceville, Texas Avenue Tavern in Bridge City, Comfort Inn on Highway 62 South in Orange, and Barbecue Depot on Old Highway 90 East in Vidor.
The pre-opening inspections with no scores given went to Simply Sweet Treats on MLK Drive in Pinehurst, and Brighter Beginnings Child on FM 1130 in Mauriceville.

Texas Snostorm, 2202 MacArthur Drive in Orange: 97. Floors were sticky plus the walls, ceiling and storage area needed to be cleaned of syrup.
Whataburger, 7241 Interstate 10 East in Orange: 97. Storage shelves were beginning to rust in the reach-in cooler and freezer.
Burkhart’s Marina, 1802 Mississippi Street in Orange: 97. Several flies and gnats were found.
Dollar General, 3024 North 16th Street in Orange: 96. Inspector pulled several expired foods from the shelves. He recommended that the staff needed training for stocking shelves.
Express Mart, 1745 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 96. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves.
The Donut Palace, 5320 North Highway 105 in Vidor: 95. Sausage was at an unsafe temperature.
Vidor Superette, 2410 North Main Street in Vidor: 93. The store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. The inside of the cappuccino machine needed to be cleaned.
McDonald’s, 765 North Main Street in Vidor: 93. Foods inside the coolers needed to be labeled and dated. Floors, walls and equipment needed to be cleaned of old foods. The area around the fryers needed to be cleaned of old grease.
Donut Nation, 18394 Highway 62 South in Orange: 91. Egg, sausage and boudain were at unsafe temperatures. Pan liners were being re-used to bake kolaches.
Domino’s Pizza, 2380 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 90. Employee drinks were improperly stored inside the reach-in cooler. The gasket needed to be repaired. The compartment sink was dripping water.
CVS Pharmacy, 290 Strickland Drive in Orange: 90. Foods were stored on the floor in the back storage room. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Restrooms needed soap and also needed to be cleaned. Old milk needed to be cleaned from the area under the milk in the reach-in cooler.
Stop N Drive, 1510 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 89. Foods inside the coolers, including sandwiches, needed to be dated. Inspector pulled several expired foods, some back to 2013, from shelves. Slight mold was on the slush machine.
Two Amigos Mexican Restaurant, 3130 16th Street in Orange: 87. Foods needed to be covered. Soap and towels were needed at the hand-washing sink. Several flies were found throughout the business. The vents above the fryers needed to be cleaned of old grease. The storage racks were rusted. Storage areas needed to be organized. Damaged ceiling tiles needed to be replaced. Broken and unused furniture needed to be discarded.
Sammy’s Stop, 2016 Pine Bark Boulevard in Orange: 86. Foods inside the reach-in cooler needed to be dated. Inspector pulled several expired foods from the shelves. Gnats were found at the drink station. Fans and ceiling inside the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned of dust. Slime and mold found inside the ice machine. The front panel of the ice machine needed to be placed back. The walls of the public restaurant needed to be cleaned of substance that was either blood or feces.
Senor Toro Mexican Restaurant, 1298 North Main Street in Vidor: 84. Rice and tamales were at unsafe temperatures. Foods inside the coolers and freezers needed to be dated. Chicken and beef were defrosting inside a bucket of water. The area around the grill needed to be cleaned of old foods. The outside wall below the vents needed to be cleaned of old grease.
Freeway Express, 115 East Freeway in Vidor: 83. Foods inside the coolers, including sandwiches, needed to be dated. Store did not have hot water. Several dead roaches were found. No sink was available for cleaning dishes. Store opened without proper permits from the county and had no temporary food service permit.
Honey Stop, 1012 West Park Avenue in Orange: 80. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice sold at store. Inspector pulled several expired foods from the shelves. Towels were needed inside the restroom. Gnats were found at the drink station. Heavy slime found inside the ice machine. Chemicals were stored above pet foods and food storage containers. Storage shelves for dry goods needed to be cleaned of old dust.

The same pan liner was used to bake kolaches. The cooler motor was dripping water into a pan and foods were stored below the pan. Several spiders were found. Black mold was found on the wall at the compartment sink. Vents above the fryers needed to be cleaned of old grease. The area around the flat-top grill needed to be cleaned of old foods.
