Vicki Mathews, 81, of Jersey Village, TX, passed away on July 3rd 2017 from a long hard fought battle of pneumonia and lung cancer. She was at home surrounded by family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held in her honor 12:00 till 3:30 PM, July 29, 2017 at American Legion Post #560 located at 3720 Alba Rd Houston, TX 77018.
Vicki was born September 28, 1935 to Alvin and Anne Nelson in Greenleaf, KS. She graduated from Greenleaf High School.
Vicki married Isaac “Ike” Mathews on November 18, 1955 in Laredo, TX. After they moved to Orange she worked several jobs, none as satisfying as the years she worked as office manager at Sid Johnson Land Co. She enjoyed competing with the Century 21 team in the Christmas Parade in Orange and building parade floats such as Frosty the Snowman and the little Drummer Boy. Vicki and Ike retired and moved to Las Vegas where she learned how the locals “lived” and loved it. She loved the desert and the mountains. She loved to have family and friends come to visit to take them around and show them the newest casinos and sights. They donated their time to a no kill cat facility often having drives and sales to raise money to help with the day to day operation. When Vicki’s health issues began they moved back to Texas. Vicki kept herself busy doing volunteer work sewing lap pads, wheelchair bags and heart monitor bags for the VA Hospital. She helped organize Neighborhood Night Out for their street and collection of water and snacks for First Responders. Anytime she could help she was willing to do so.
Vicki is preceded in death by her parents Alvin and Anne Nelson, three sisters Nadine “Keat” Nelson, Mary J. McGowan and Jeanette “Nettie” Mann.
Vicki is survived by her husband of 61 years Ike Mathews, one daughter Kim Mathews Box and husband Lynn, twin sons Tracy Mathews and Stacy Mathews one Grandson Wes Vawter and two great grandsons Aiden Vawter and Morghen Vawter. She is also survived by her brother Chuck Nelson of Missouri and many nieces and nephews, and her cat Little Dink. She will be missed by friends and family.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to Friends for Life a “no kill animal shelter” located at 107 E 22nd St Houston 77008. If you choose to donate cat or dog food there will be a collection table at the Celebration of Life. This was a cause near and dear to Vicki’s heart. The family would also like to thank her beloved niece Kjiston McGowan Tillman for her love and support, Synergy Home Health Care and Hospice Plus for helping us through this trying time.
