Gene Peyton “ Slick “ Atkins, 78, of Orange, passed from this life on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at his residence. Born on April 4, 1937 in Deweyville, Texas to his parents, Gilbert Peyton Atkins and Tabitha (Fulcher) Atkins, he was a lifelong resident of Southeast Texas, he attended and graduated from Orange High School in 1953 and he worked as a Supervisor for Allied Signal, which is now Honeywell, where he retired in 1995. Gene was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Orange, a member of the Orange Boat Club for 35 years and he was also a member of the Heritage House Museum for many years. Gene was a lover of Baseball, Horse Racing, he loved animals, bird watching and he enjoyed traveling, especially to Las Vegas. Gene is preceded in death by his parents; his sons, Chuck and Keith Atkins and his three sisters. Those who will most cherish his memory are his loving wife of 24 years, Joyce Atkins of Orange, Texas; his daughter, Phyllis Nazworth and husband, John of Orange; his sons, Tim Wallace of Orange and David Wallace and wife Sydni of Pascagoula, Mississippi; his six grandchildren, Jacob, Colton, Randi, Kelli, Noah and Jerod; his great granddaughter, Jacelynn and Gene is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and members of his extended family and friends. A gathering of Gene’s family and friends for a time of reflection and sharing will be from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Friday, June 19, 2015 at Dorman Funeral Home in Orange. Cremation was held prior to the gathering. Gene’s family wishes to thank the staff of River City Hospice for the loving care provided to Gene during his final days, especially Baileigh, Maggie and Kristen.
