Alfred John Flies, 92, of Orange, Texas, passed away on August 14, 2015 at his home. Born in 1923 in rural Oklahoma, Alfred was a child during the roaring 20’s, only to see the Dust Bowl years and Great Depression of the 1930’s as a teenager on an Oklahoma cotton farm. After high school, Alfred enlisted in the Navy and served aboard the USS Yosemite in the Pacific during WWII.
After graduating from Oklahoma A&M, Alfred spent a brief time in Dallas before being transferred to a Sears store in Port Arthur, where he worked during the 1950’s. This is where he met his wife, Gertie. They married and had four children.
Alfred then started his own business and moved his family in the 1960’s to Orange. After many years as owner of Alfred’s Interiors, Alfred started making wine with a family recipe during the 1980’s. He ultimately retired from the previous business and opened the Piney Woods Country Winery and Vineyards. Alfred was very successful with the winery for the last 30 years, winning over 80 medals and awards for his wine in competitions. His wine won the 2009 Top Texas Wine in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo International Wine Competition.
Alfred was proud of his family and loved spending time with them. His wife of almost 50 years passed way in 2002. He is survived by his children, two sisters and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A celebration of his life is being planned in the near future. The family would like to thank River City Hospice for their help and support over the past two years. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.
