A municipal improvement that has been in the works for years is starting to take shape in Pinehurst. The West Park located on Park Avenue is getting a new walking track, new benches, and new playground equipment.
Pinehurst Alderman T. W. Permenter has been advocating for several years to have a walk path at the park. Permenter said he walked the path for the first time this week and is looking forward to its completion. Playground equipment for special needs children will be added. There will also be a horseshoe pitching area and a sand volleyball court. “We’re looking forward to having a great thing out there,” Permenter exclaimed.
Work on the track began back in May and runs roughly a fifth of a mile. Further topping and curving of the track’s surface to allow rain to run off it is still to be done before the track is completed.
Adrian Willingham has constructed his Eagle Scout project with four Adirondack chairs making up a reading rest station by the track. Bryce McAlester is a prospective Eagle Scout who has presented his plans to the city for building another rest area at West Park. Permenter indicated a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held when all the projects are completed.
