After Harvey flooded thousands of cars across Orange County, new vehicle registrations are backed up in the county Tax Assessor-Collector Office.
The office has been averaging 30 to 40 new registrations a day, and one day had 94 titles, said Tax Assessor-Collector Karen Fisher.
“We are trying to do this as fast as we can,” she said. “One person does 10 to 20, and in that time, twice as many come in.”
The tax office is in the county administration building in Orange with a branch at the Vidor sub-courthouse. Both places have been busy.
Fisher said people can make the process go faster by making sure they bring their vehicle inspection document. If they don’t have a copy, they can return to the dealer and get one.
“Used cars, if currently registered, don’t need to be inspected, but it might be good to go on and get it inspected,” she said.
The state usually keeps a record of the VIN (vehicle identification number) of any car that has been reported to an insurance company as having been flooded. But because of the number of cars damaged by water across the state in Harvey, those cars will not be in the system now, she said. She advises people to be aware that cars that might flooded.
People planning on getting a new car registered now should expect a wait. “Please be patient. We’re tryng to process them as fast as we can,” Fisher said.
