Up to 20 brass-coated railroad axle bearings worth $1,000 each were stolen during the weekend from Gulf Coast Rail Service in downtown Orange. Police report that company personnel discovered the theft about 7:40 Monday morning. The business is at 1301 W. Front Street. Officer T.P. Pruitt said the axle bearings had been kept in a 80-foot long storage trailer. The bearings are described as being in a semi-circle 12 inches long. One end has a diameter of about nine inches and the other end has a diameter of about 12 inches. The company said 15 to 20 were stolen.
Eight tires and wheels worth about $6,500 were stolen from two vehicles on the lot of Cecil Atkission Toyota, 4301 Interstate 10. The passenger side windows of both had been broken. Officer L.T. Holland reported that the manager discovered the thefts about 6:30 Monday morning. A couple of employees had been at the business on Sunday and the vehicles were intact at that time.
More fishing equipment was reported stolen Monday evening from a house in the 4300 block of Highland Street. The resident said he went to work and when he returned, he discovered an inflatable boat and roods and reels missing from the garage. Orange Police Officer D.B. Mulhollan reported the Seahawk inflatable boat is a dark green and yellow. Also stolen were two Falcon rods with two Shimano reels. The rods and reels are valued at $500.
