More than half the food establishments inspected during the first part of November received perfect 100 scores, but two scored in the 70s and a Vidor convenience store had to be shut down for a day.
Orange County Health Inspector James Scales went to 23 food establishments from November 1 through 15. Fourteen, including 13 schools received the perfect scores. New York Pizza and Pasta off Interstate 10 in Vidor was the only restaurant or store getting the top score.
The lowest score was a 77 for The Falls Grocery and Meats in Vidor. Homsi’s in Orange received a 79.
Scales reported Pine Forest Fuel, on North Main Street in Vidor, opened without a food service permit. On November 8, he found several violations and gave the store a chance to “make corrections to several critical violations.” He went back the next day and determined the store should be closed. The store was able to open on November 10.
The schools earning the top scores are Little Cypress-Mauriceville High, Little Cypress Elementary, Oak Forest Elementary, Bridge City Intermediate, Bridge City High, Pine Forest Elementary, Vidor Middle and Orangefield Elementary.
Others scores and demerits are:
Little Caesar’s Pizza, 2421 16th Street in Orange: 98. Oven needed to be cleaned of old foods. Air vents and ceiling tiles needed to be cleaned of a dust build-up, floors throughout store (especially at baseboards) needed to be cleaned of old foods and dirt.
Domino’s Pizza, 970 North Main Street in Vidor: 98. Oven needed to be cleaned of old foods, floors throughout store needed to be cleaned, floor tiles were damaged or missing, several sections of walls needed to be repaired.
Subway, 1090 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 97. Paper towels were needed at front hand-washing station, floors behind equipment and around baseboards needed to be cleaned of old foods and dirt.
Popeye’s Chicken, 952 North Main Street in Vidor: 95. Ceiling tiles were stored improperly on back storage shelves, several gnats were in the back storage area, floors needed to be cleaned of old foods, baseboards were missing or damaged, ceiling tiles were damaged inside dining room.
Tequila’s Mexican Restaurant, 1085 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 87. Fajita beef and chicken were at unsafe temperatures, faucet at three-compartment sink was dripping at base and needed to be repaired, restaurant had problems with hot water and inspector ordered to be repaired immediately, dates were needed on products, mice feces were found in back storage buildings, outside and back areas needed to be cleaned and old equipment needed to be repaired or removed, storage shelves and containers needed to be cleaned of old foods. Inspector planned follow-up inspection.
Lakeview Grocery, 915 Highway 1131 in Vidor: 81. Bait shrimp were stored with foods inside freezer, mold and slime were inside ice machine, chemicals were stored above plastic utensils and paper goods, hand sink and restroom sink did not have hot water, store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold, store didn’t have front hand sink because it was removed during remodeling, glass door to warmer was missing and left foods exposed, employee was smoking at food prep area, inspector found lots of trash and debris on ground outside.
Homsi’s, 7247 Interstate 10 East in Orange: 79. Boudain was at unsafe temperatures, foods needed to be covered, mold was inside ice machine, chemicals and buckets of paint were stored improperly, faucets were dripping water at base and needed to be repaired, dates needed on all products, employees needed hair restraints, employee drinks did not have lids and straws, fish was defrosting on top of counter, Vent-a-Hood along with inside of walk-in cooler and freezer, storage shelves, floors and air vents needed to be cleaned of old foods and dust, damaged ceiling tiles needed to be replaced, inspector recommended more general cleaning.
The Falls Grocery and Meats, 1914 South Main Street in Vidor: 77. Inspector found dented cans, mold on slush machine, spray bottle of chemical was stored inside cooler, drain inside walk-in cooler was clogged, gaskets on walk-in cooler needed to be replaced, dates were needed on all products, paper towels were needed at deli hand sink, wood table tops were being used, cell phone was on prep table, light shields were needed, ceiling tiles were damaged, floors throughout store needed to be cleaned of dirt, back storage room needed to be cleaned and organized, baseboards needed to be repaired or replaced. Inspector planned follow-up.
