A reported Interstate 10 collision Wednesday morning is being investigated as a case of aggravated assault after the driver of an 18-wheel truck rig intentionally hit a small SUV that had passed him.

Orange police report the 18-wheeler struck the SUV several times in the rear, forced the vehicle into the center wall and pushed it for a distance. Texas Department of Public Safety troopers were called to the scene near FM 1136 at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Orange Detective Captain Robert Enmon said when troopers learned it was a possible assault, they called police. He said the small SUV had substantial damage. The driver, a man from Vidor, was taken by Acadian Ambulance to Baptist Hospital in Beaumont with neck and back pains. Captain Enmon said the man was later released after treatment.

Officer L.T. Holland reported the SUV driver said he had passed the big rig in the right lane and then moved back into the inside lane. The 18-wheeler came up and crashed into the back of the SUV. Witnesses stopped and reported what they had seen.

Captain Enmon said the truck rig driver, a man from Beaumont, was questioned by detectives but has not been arrested or charged with a crime. The investigation is continuing.
