Restaurants, businesses and schools with food were spiffed up for the new year. Orange County Health Inspector James Scales went to 20 businesses in the second part of January and gave nine perfect scores and four scores of 99. The lowest was an 84 for the Texas Food Store at 305 Burton Avenue in Orange.
The scores of 100 went to Walgreen’s in Bridge City, Apple Tree Child Enrichment in Orangefield, Subway on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Pinehurst, Orangefield High School, North Early Learning Center in Orange, Vidor Elementary School, North Main Street Seafood in Vidor, Mauriceville Elementary, and Little Cypress Intermediate School.
Scales also made a pre-opening inspection with no score for the Red Wagon Cafe No. 2, 445 West Freeway at the Vidor Flea Market.
Other scores and demerits were:
Dairy Queen, North Highway 62 in Mauriceville: 99. The Vent-a-Hood and side of the flat-top grill needed to be cleaned of old grease.
The Hut, 1804 16th Street in Orange: 99. Several flies were found.
Country Corner, 1810 South Main Street in Vidor: 99. Several dead roaches were found in the back storage area.
Family Dollar, 1540 Strickland Drive in Pinehurst: 99. Shelves inside the milk cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods. The back storage area needed to be cleaned and organized. Items needed to be picked off the floor. Damaged ceiling tiles needed to be repaired.
Fast Stop Food Store, 2410 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 97. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Drinks needed to be stored six inches off the floor inside the walk-in cooler and inside the storage room.
Smoke Shop, 585 North Main Street in Vidor: 97. Most of the chips and a few of the bottled drinks were out of date.
Big Lots, 2260 MacArthur Drive in Pinehurst: 96. Hot water was needed inside restrooms. Several dead roaches were found in the back storage area and one on the sales floor. Storage shelves on the sales floor needed to be cleaned of old foods and dust.
Novrozsky’s Restaurant, 1035 North Main Street in Vidor: 92. Raw beef was stored above liquid eggs inside the walk-in cooler. Rusted storage shelves were being used to store clean dishes. Cutting boards on the front line had deep cuts and needed to be repaired or replaced. Several gnats were found in the back storage area. Vent-a-Hoods, fryers, flat-top grill, storage shelves and floors needed to be cleaned. Inspector suggested general cleaning throughout the restaurant daily.
Sonic Drive In, 2210 Highway 62 in McLewis: 91. The toaster and vegetable cutting equipment needed to be cleaned of old foods. In addition, the sides of fryers, floors, walls and shelves needed to be cleaned. The shelves holding clean dishes and the inside of the walk-in cooler were beginning to rust and needed repairs. Utensils were stored between the equipment with handles up. Light shields were needed. Inspector reported lots of general cleaning was needed.
Texas Food Store, 305 Burton Avenue in Orange: 84. Mold was inside the ice machine. The inside of the microwave oven needed to be cleaned of old foods. The ice scoop was on top of the ice machine. The restroom did not have hot water. Pipes at the three-compartment sink needed repairing. Water was not draining under the sink.
Dates were needed on foods inside the walk-in cooler. Paper towels were needed inside the restroom. Spider webs were in the back storage room. Drinks needed to be stored off the floor. Light shields were needed. The restroom needed to be clean. Inspector recommended more general cleaning.
