Restaurants and food service businesses scored mostly high during health inspections during the first part of July. Only two of the 19 businesses inspected received a perfect score, but 12 of the 19 rated in the 90s. Violations leading to demerits included flies, gnats, spider webs and mold in drink dispensers. Texas Country Store at 16th Street and Interstate 10 had the lowest score with a 79. The store had no major violations but a number of infractions including general cleaning. The two perfect scores went to Day’s Inn, 2630 Interstate 10 West, and Wal-Mart on Texas Avenue in Bridge City. Scales made a pre-opening inspection with no score to El Mexicano Meat Market, 2455 Texas Avenue in Bridge City.

Fastbreak, 695 North Main Street in Vidor: 97. The inside of the cappuccino machine needed to be cleaned of old foods.
PK’s Grill, 1627 Strickland Drive in Pinehurst: 97. The vent above the grill needed to be cleaned of old grease. Air returns in the restaurant needed to be cleaned of dust.
Holiday Inn Express, 2655 Interstate 10 East in Orange: 95. Sausage was found at an unsafe temperature.
Taco Bell, 455 North Main Street in Vidor: 94. Several flies were found throughout the store. Floors and equipment needed to be cleaned of old food and trash. Mold was on the drink dispenser. Inspector suggested “lots of general cleaning” was needed.
Chili’s Grill and Bar, 292 Strickland Drive in Orange: 94. Pipes at the hand-washing sink were dripping water from the bottom and needed to be repaired. Floors, equipment and food contact surfaces needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease. Inspection said “lots of general cleaning” was needed daily. Missing floor grout needed to be repaired.
McDonald’s, 1710 North 16th Street in Orange: 93. Foods in the cooler needed to be dated. Floors and equipment needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Tico’s Cuban Cafe, 1145 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 93. Raw beef was stored above break inside the freezer. The around the fryers needed to be cleaned of old grease. Air vents needed to be cleaned of old grease and dust. Damaged freezers and ceiling tiles inside the kitchen needed to be replaced.
Snow Flake Donuts, 1402 Strickland Drive in Pinehurst: 92. Boudain, sausage and eggs were not at proper temperatures. The inside of the cappuccino machine needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Waffle House, 125 East Freeway in Vidor: 91. Several flies were found throughout the restaurant. The front cooler was holding water and the reach-in cooler was dripping water. Both needed to be repaired. Storage racks inside the cooler were starting to rust. The area around the grill needed to be cleaned of old grease build-up and old foods. The outside of equipment needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Dollar General, 385 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 90. Inspector reported the “store was found in very poor cleaning condition.” He pulled several expired foods from 2014 and 2015 from the shelves. Spiders and webs were along wall and ceiling areas throughout the store. Floors and shelves needed to be cleaned of old dirt and dust. The inside of the reach-in coolers needed to be cleaned of old foods. The inspector was going to make a follow-up inspection to check on cleaning.
Stop N Drive, 1801 DuPont Drive: 89. Drinks were stored on the floor. The restrooms did not have hot water. The inside of the cappuccino machine needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Flying J Travel Plaza, 7112 Interstate 10 West in Orange: 89. Pizza was found at unsafe temperatures. A dead roach was found in the back storage room. Inspector said “lots of cleaning needed at this location.” He said the storage shelves at the drink stations, all areas of the kitchen and storage areas needed to be cleaned. In addition, the floors and walls needed to be cleaned of old grease.
Church’s Chicken, 1322 16th Street in Orange: 84. Water from the motor in the inside cooler was dripping onto boxes of chicken. The walk-in cooler door did not close completely and needed to be repaired. Several flies were found throughout the restaurant. Floors, fryers, the areas around the fryers and storage shelves needed to be cleaned of old grease.
Lom’s Seafood, 2507 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 84. The store had storing freezers inside the living quarters. No hot water was inside the store. Freezers were not closing completely and needed to be repaired or replaced. No hand-washing sink was available and no sanitizing solution was found. Thermometers were needed. Floor tiles were missing or broken. Floors, walls and the back storage area needed to be cleaned of old foods and trash.
Texas Country Store, 3701 North 16th Street: 79. Sandwiches inside the coolers needed to be dated. The inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. The hot water at the three-compartment sink was not hot enough for health standards. Several gnats were found in the back storage area. The sink in the men’s room had water dripping from the bottom of the pipe. Mold was on the drink dispensers. Old food and trash was on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. The back storage room needed to be cleaned and organized.
