Orange County Health Inspector James Scales went to schools to give out grades. The 11 school cafeterias he visited during the latter part of October aced their inspections. All made perfect scores.
Scales went to 18 food-related establishments during the period with the lowest score going to Kam Wah Buffet on Strickland Drive in Pinehurst. The restaurant had a 74 score and Scales said the establishment needed “more general cleaning.
The schools with the perfect scores were North Early Learning Center, Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School, Vidor Elementary, Vidor Junior High, Orangefield Elementary, Bridge City Elementary, West Orange-Stark Middle School, Mauriceville Elementary, Pine Forest Elementary, Vidor Middle School, Bridge City High School and Vidor High School.
Scales made two pre-opening inspections with no scores given for Hamburger Depot on Texas Avenue in Bridge City and King’s Gumbo on Western Avenue in West Orange.
Other scores and demerits were:
New York Pizza and Pasta, 18635 Interstate 10 in Vidor: 97. Inspector found slime inside the ice machine. Storage shelves needed to be cleaned of old foods. Broken and unused equipment needed to be removed from the kitchen. Damaged ceiling tiles needed to be replaced.
Stars Petro Plus, 1955 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Orange: 86. The store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Dead roaches were found in the storage room. An ice scoop was inside the hand-washing sink. Mold was on the slushy machines. Drinks needed to be stored off the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Damaged ceiling tiles needed to be replaced.
Kim Wah Buffet, 150 Strickland Drive in Pinehurst: 74. Employee drinks without lids and straws were out. Foods needed to be labeled, dated and covered. Fish and pork were defrosting inside the same sink of water. One of the faucets at the dish sink did not have hot water. Gaskets on the coolers needed to be repaired. Vents above fryers and wok needed to be cleaned of old grease. Floors and equipment needed to be cleaned of old foods. Floor tiles were missing throughout the restaurant and needed to be repaired. Restaurant needed to discard all broken and unused equipment that was sitting outside the back door. More general cleaning is needed.
