Eight of 29 food establishments received perfect scores from Orange County Health Inspector James Scales during the last part of August. Two of the total were pre-opening inspections with no scores. The lowest score was an 82 for the Texas Country Store at 7411 Interstate 10 East in Orange. Places getting 100s for no violations were First Presbyterian Day School in Orange, The Garden District in Orange, JB’s Barbecue in Orange, Family Dollar at 3695 North Main Street in Vidor, The Brown Estate in Orange, The Enchanted Cottage in Orange, First Baptist Church in Orange, and Shiver Shack in Orange.
The pre-opening inspections were for Joann’s Family Kitchen, 1111 Green Avenue in Orange, and KidZ World Learning Center, 1875 Miller Drive in Bridge City. Other scores and demerits were:
Whataburger, 2300 MacArthur Drive in Pinehurst: 97. Gnats were in the back storage area. Missing baseboard tiles near the ice machine needed to be replaced.
Luigi’s Italian Grill, 3105 Edgar Brown Drive in West Orange: 97. No certified food manager was on staff.
James Brown Gumbo House, 995 North Main Street in Vidor: 97. The area around the fryers and grill needed to be cleaned of old grease.
El Ranchero Mexican Restaurant, 2413 16th Street in Orange: 97. Soap was needed at the hand-washing stations.
Subway, 300 North Main Street in Vidor: 94. Storage racks for clean dishes were beginning to rust. No certified food manager was on staff.
Chicken Express, 2250 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 94. Pipes were dripping water at the service sinks and water hose. Mold was found on drink dispensers. Shelves needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease. Light shields were needed. Air vents and returns in the dining room needed to be cleaned of dust buildup. Missing floor grout needed to be replaced.
K-Dan’s Super Foods Deli, 9604 FM 105 in Orangefield: 94. The reach-in cooler was holding water and needed to be repaired. The area around the fryers and grill needed to be cleaned. Deli had build-up of old grease. Floors, walls and the inside coolers needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Little Caesar’s Pizza, 715 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 93. Employee drinks were found inside the walk-in cooler next to foods for public sale. Floors and equipment needed to be cleaned of old foods. Air vents needed to be cleaned of old dust build-up.
Dollar General, 11776 Highway 62 North in Mauriceville: 93. Boxes of food were stored on the floor inside the walk-in freezer. Trash and empty boxes needed to be disposed and taken out of walk-in cooler and freezer. Air vents needed to be cleaned of dust build-up.
Domino’s Pizza, 2107 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 93. Employee personal items were stored next to food for public sale. No certified food manager was on staff.
K-Dan’s Super Foods, 9604 FM 105 in Orangefield: 92. Store name and address were needed on all bags of ice being sold. Boxes of food were stored on the floor in the walk-in freezer.
Mazzio’s Pizza, 3108 Edgar Brown Drive in Orange: 92. Pizza on buffet line was at improper temperature. Manager disposed of food immediately. Storage shelves and floors needed to be cleaned of old foods.
M&S Grocery, 10876 FM 1130 in Little Cypress: 90. All foods inside the coolers needed to be dated. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. A gasket on the reach-in freezer needed to be replaced. Slime was found on the drink dispensers and inside the ice machine. Paint was starting to come off the ceiling inside the walk-in cooler. Area under milk needed to be cleaned of old foods. Mop sink was needed inside the store. Missing and damaged floor tiles needed to be replaced. Light shields were needed.
Casa Ole, 1716 16th Street in Orange: 90. Employee drinks did not have lid and straw. Employee foods found at prep stations. Reach-in freezer was not keeping correct temperatures and needed repairing. Floors and more general cleaning of old foods needed to be done more often. Mold was found inside the ice machine.
Sonic Drive-In, 340 North Main Street in Vidor: 90. Foods inside the coolers and freezers needed to be covered. Pipes at the three-compartment sink were dripping water. The front cooler was holding water. Area around fryers needed to be cleaned of old grease. Floors needed to be cleaned.
Romano’s 8.31 Italian, 10383 Highway 12 in Mauriceville: 90. Foods inside the coolers and freezers needed to be dated. No hand-washing sink was available. Walls needed to be cleaned of old foods. Lights and air vents needed to be cleaned of dust build-up.
The Donut Palace, 1875 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 88. Sausage and egg were not at proper temperatures. All foods inside coolers and freezers needed to be dated. Walls and equipment needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Shell Food Mart, 3118 Edgar Brown Drive in Orange: 86. Sandwiches inside the coolers needed to be dated. Drinks were found sitting on floor. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Several dead roaches were found inside the storage room. Slime was inside the ice machine and on drink dispensers. The ice scoop was broken.
Texas Country Store, 7411 Interstate 10 East in Orange: 82. Sandwiches inside coolers needed to be dated. The roof was leaking water into a bucket on the floor. Inspector pulled several expired foods, some back to 2014, from shelves. Lots of ants were near the syrup inside the storage cabinets. A dead roach was found in the back storage area. The back storage area needed to be cleaned and organized. Slime was inside the ice machine. Ice scoop was lying on top of a box.
