Restaurants and food businesses getting health inspections weren’t perfect, but not bad. During the last part of July, Orange County Health Inspector James Scales gave 19 scores with only one making a perfect 100. However, 11 of those scored in the 90s and six had scores of 97. Simply Sweet Treats at 2494 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Pinehurst had the perfect score. The lowest score was 80 and went to the LC-M Mart, 8270 North Highway 87 in Little Cypress. Scales also delayed a score for Novrozky’s on 16th Street in Orange because the restaurant had a kitchen fire the day he visited. A pre-opening inspection was made at Shiver Shack, 6928 Highway 87 North. The scores and demerits are:
Pilot Travel Center, 2205 Highway 62 in Orange: 97. Trash under the storage shelves inside the walk-in cooler needed to be removed.
Snappy’s Express Mart, 3145 Highway 87 in Bridge City: 97. The ceiling inside the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned and repaired.
Gator’s Nest, 3145 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 97. The areas under the grill and vents needed to be cleaned of old grease.
Whataburger, 540 North Main Street in Vidor: 97. Gaskets needed to be replaced on the reach-in coolers. Baseboard tires were broken and needed to be repaired. The motor inside the walk-in freezer had ice build-up and needed to be repaired.
Fastlane, 2598 North Main Street in Vidor: 97. An ice scoop was found on top of shelves.
Wal-Mart Deli, 3115 Edgar Brown Drive in West Orange: 97. Plumbing at the hand-washing station needed to be repaired. Floor tiles needed to be regrouted.
Sonic Drive-In, 1265 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 94. The front plate on the floor of the walk-in cooler and freezer needed to be repaired. Floors and equipment around the fryers needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease. Light shields needed to be cleaned. Missing floor grout needed to be repaired.
Speedy Stop Food Mart, 690 North Main Street in Vidor: 94. Gaskets needed to be repaired on the freezer door. The area under the milk needed to be cleaned of old milk inside of the walk-in cooler. The store needed to make sure drinks were stored at least six inches off the floor.
Sunset Grove Country Club, 2900 West Sunset Drive in Orange: 94. Several gnats were found. The area around the fryers and grill needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease. Holes in the wall needed to be repaired.
Veteran’s Grocery, 1900 DuPont Drive in Orange: 93. No water was inside the store. No hand-washing sink was available.
Shipley Donuts, 2913 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 93. Containers of food were stored on the floor. Open bags of flour were inside the dry storage area. Several gnats found in the back storage area.
Pizza Hut, 1720 Lutcher Drive in Orange: 91. The gasket on the front cooler needed to be repaired. Thermometers were needed inside the cooler and freezer. Storage shelves, walls and ceilings needed to be cleaned of old foods and dust. Paint was coming off the ceiling and corner of wall needed to be repaired. Vents above the fryers needed to be cleaned of old grease.
Get n Go, 2419 16th Street in Orange: 89. Sandwiches needed to be dated inside the cooler/freezer. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. The slushy machine needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Dollar General, 5725 16th Street in Orange: 89. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Water was not connected to the restroom toilet and inspector said it needed to be fixed immediately. Shelves and doors inside the milk cooler needed to be cleaned of old milk.
Domino’s Pizza, 970 North Main Street in Vidor: 89. An employee was wearing improper jewelry. Chicken was stored on the top shelf inside the walk-in cooler. The oven needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Little Caesar’s Pizza, 866 North Main Street in Vidor: 83. Employees needed hair restraints. Employee drinks and pizza found on prep table and inside freezers. Several flies were found on top of raw breadsticks. Management destroyed the product. Several flies were found throughout the restaurant. Floors, equipment, oven, inside of walk-in cooler, inside of reach-in cooler, and freezers needed to be cleaned of old foods. The air vent in the back storage room had black mold and needed to be cleaned. No certified food manager was on staff. Inspector recommended more cleaning throughout the store.
Kwik Stop Valero, 2210 South Main Street in Vidor: 82. Burrito and fried chicken were at unsafe temperatures. The store name and address were needed on all bags of ice being sold. Gaskets needed to be replaced on coolers. Chemicals were stored on the top shelf in prep area. Slime was inside the ice machine. Inspector recommended the entire store and kitchen be cleaned of old dirt and grease. He said the store was “in very poor condition.”
LC-M Mart, 8270 North Highway 87 in Orange: 80. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Drinks were stored on the floor of the walk-in cooler. Hot water at the three-compartment sink needed to be repaired. It would stop working when the hand-washing faucet was turned on. The door to the walk-in cooler was not closing completely and needed to be repaired. Gnats were found in the back storage area. Floors in the back storage room and inside the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods. Light shields needed to be repaired. Damaged ceiling tiles and the air-conditioner needed to be repaired. No certified food manager was on staff.
