Pinehurst Mayor Pete Runnels said he will be running as a Republican for Orange County Judge in 2018. Runnels served as county judge in the late 1970s until 1983, when he lost a bid for re-election.
“I see a lot of things that can be done differently,” he said about county government.
He said he has visited with county employees in different departments and people in the public. They have encouraged him to run.
Runnels, 73, has served six two-year terms as mayor of Pinehurst. The terms have not been consecutive, though he is now serving his third term in a row.
County Judge Brint Carlton, a Republican, is currently in his first four-year term in the position. He has not announced whether he will run again or not.
The party primary races for county, state and national offices will be in March next year. Runnels had previously been a Democrat when serving as county judge but he said he has switched parties. In 2016, all the county candidates ran as Republicans.
