A stated goal of Pinehurst City Administrator Robbie Hood is improving the curb appeal of Pinehurst. Hood spoke to the Pinehurst City Council this week about three areas he would like to address to make Pinehurst more family friendly and appealing.
The first is enhancing the facilities at the West Park. Working with Entergy, Hood has recently had the lighting at the park greatly improved. Hood elaborated on his future plans for the park. Hood wants to put together a committee to look over plans and specifications to enhance the West Park with new playground equipment and construct a walking trail at the park. He wants to involve council members and members of the Pinehurst community to get their brains together to formulate a plan before any funding is done on improvements.
Following the flooding from Hurricane Ike, FEMA required government entities to purchase properties that were severely damaged. One such property according to Hood is at 3402 West Park Avenue. Hood pointed out Pinehurst cannot sell the property or build any kind of structure on it for 99 years under the FEMA guidelines. Hood envisions creating a dog park on that facility, and he wants a committee to look into the feasibility of such a plan.
Pinehurst is recognized as having one of the best and most humane animal shelters in the area. Hood would like to see the current facility on 28th Street improved. Hood admits the city takes pride in having a no kill animal shelter, but that said there is a growth problem at the animal shelter with the number of animals housed there. The city administrator would like to encourage a group like Friends of the Library, but instead Friends of the Animal Shelter. The group would do fund raising to help Pinehurst with its limited availability of funds to enhance the appearance of the animal shelter, adding additional pens, and things of that nature. Hood reminds citizens there are plenty of wonderful animals available for adoption at the Pinehurst Animal Shelter.
