The manager of a Dollar General store told Orange police Wednesday evening that she fell victim to a phone scam.
Police went to the store at 4725 North 16th Street about 7 p.m. Wednesday. The manager told police a man called the store and told her he was with the corporate loss prevention department.
He asked her to get five gift cards and register them for $499.01 each. After she did that, he instructed her to scratch off the coverings on the numbers and tell him the numbers. He told her he needed to update the store’s system.
Not long after following the instructions, the manager got a call from another man who told her he was with Dollar General loss prevention. He was calling to ask about why that many gift cards had been registered.
When she told him about the phone call, the man with the corporate office said she had been a victim of fraud. He told her to file a police report.
