The Orange City Council and the city’s Economic Development Corporation voted to spend $658,000 in economic development money to extend water and sewer lines on West Allie Payne Road to White Oak Road. City Economic Development Director Jay Trahan said the extension of city services is the first phase of a long-term plan to take water and sewer lines all the way west along Allie Payne Road to Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Then the lines will be installed to hook up with the lines recently put in at the First Baptist Church site.
The money is to be used for 1,725 linear feet of water and sewer pipelines plus a sewer lift station. The economic development money comes from a special half-cent per dollar sales tax.
City Council also approved a measure to sell $5 million in general obligation bonds for improvements and repairs to the water plant and the sewer plant systems. Bond Attorney Guy Goodson with the Germer Law Firm of Beaumont said the sale will be the first time in seven years the city has issued general obligation bonds to raise money. State law allows cities to issue general obligation bonds to be issued for infrastructure without holding an election.
