State Senator Robert Nichols was in Orange this week. Senator Nichols along with Congressman Brian Babin met with officials from the Sabine-Neches Waterway on Wednesday. Thursday he met at the Orange County Convention and Expo Center to review the recovery from last week’s flooding in Orange and Newton Counties.
Currently, the Texas Legislature is in an interim session and is not meeting in Austin. Nichols said he asked to have Orange County in his Senatorial District 3 and is always working to learn the issues among his constituents. Nichols indicated redistricting in 2013 included Orange County with neighboring Jasper and Newton Counties which were already in his district. He began introducing himself to county and city officials before then so as to understand and address their concerns. Nichols believes that worked pretty well.
During the current interim session the state legislature does conduct hearings and Nichols encourages citizens who are interested in being a part of their state government to contact his office. Nichols informs that the Sunset Commission will be considering health care agencies and the State Bar Association of Texas which could mean revisions to the licenses issued for health care facilities and attorneys in the state. There will be financial hearings during the interim as well. Nichols emphasized that legislators do want to hear from citizens with first-hand experience and legislators pay a lot of attention to those that come testify at their hearings. The state senator’s office in Austin can be contacted for information on dates of certain hearings by calling (512) 463-0103.
Nichols met with Orange County Judge Brint Carlton and emergency management officials Thursday at the Convention and Expo Center. Nichols has been following the situation closely since the flooding started over a week ago in Newton and Orange Counties. Nichols was in contact with Orange County officials during the initial stages of the flood to make sure the state response was satisfying their needs. Now he is following up to see that the recovery is carried through and do his part to get the area back on its feet.
