Orange County Health Inspector James Scales released six weeks of restaurant and food business reports with 37 places visited. Six inspections were for new businesses and no scores were given. Seven, mostly school cafeterias, had perfect scores.
The lowest ratings were a 79 for the Church’s Chicken on 16th Street in Orange and an 80 for Hushpuppy’s Seafood in Vidor. Scales said both businesses needed follow-up inspections to see if they were cleaning to meet standards.
Church’s, 1322 16th Street, had demerits for things like mice feces throughout the store, employees needing hair restraints and dirty baseboards with old foods and grease. Scales wrote “store needs more cleaning” and “score does not reflect condition of store.”
The perfect scores went to the Vidor City Pool at Conn Park, Vidor Junior High School, Vidor High School, West Orange-Elementary, Brighter Beginnings Child Care in Mauriceville and Sweet Bee Boutique in Bridge City. West Orange-Stark High School had a 99 with a demerit for dead roaches.

Domino’s Pizza, 2380 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 97. Employee had a drink without a lid and straw. Floors, walls and air vents needed to be cleaned of old foods and dirt. Certified food manager certificate was not posted in front of the restaurant.
Panthers Den Fuel Stop, 11845 Highway 62 North in Mauriceville: 97. Water was dripping from air vents. Ceiling tiles were damaged. Current health report needed to be posted in front of deli.
Texas Sno Storm, 2202 MacArthur Drive in Pinehurst: 96. Employees needed hair restraints. Storage shelves and floors needed to be cleaned. Current food service permit and health inspection report were not posted in front of store.
Mauriceville Fuel Stop, 11845 Highway 62 in Mauriceville: 96. Restroom did not have hot water. Ceiling tiles were damaged. Current food service permit and health inspection report were not posted in front of store.
Charlotte’s Shaved Ice, 110 South Main Street in Vidor: 96. Employees needed hair restraings. Test strips were used for sanitizer. First aid kit needed. Current food service permit and health inspection report were not posted in front of store.
Snack Shack, 13246 North Highway 87 in Orange: 96. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers. Paper towels were neededd at handwashing stations.
LaQuinta Inn and Suites, 2220 Highway 62 South in Orange: 95. Inspector found sausage with white gravy not at proper temperatures. The three-compartment since needed to be resealed.
Joann’s Family Kitchen, 1111 Green Avenue: 95. Baked chicken and brown gravy were not at proper temperatures. Storage shelves inside the coolers and freezers needed to be cleaned. Handwashing signs were not posted at the handwashing stations. Certified food manager certificate was not posted in front of restaurant.
Showbiz Cinema, 3330 Bowling Lane in Orange: 94. Water was draining from the ice machine behind a wall to the floor drain in the next room. Restroom did not have hot water. Certified food manager certificate was not posted in front of cinema. Handwashing signs were not posted at handwashing station.
Chicken Express, 2250 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 94. Employees were wearing improper jewelry and needed hair restraints. Sanitized cloths were stored on the counter. Cloth stored inside ice scoop container. Vent-a-Hood, storage shelves and walls needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease. Lights needed inside walk-in coolers and freezer. Light shield needed. Handwashing signs needed at handwashing stations. Bottom of back door needed to be resealed.
Subway, 10383 Highway 12 in Mauriceville: 94. Chemicals were stored improperly. Store did not have food handler certification. Certified food manager certificates needed to be posted in front of restaurant.

Novrozsky’s, 501 16th Street in Orange: 93. Front reach-in cooler was holding water. Dates needed on products, not a weekday sticker. Vent-a-Hood and area around grill and fryers, along with floors and walls needed to be cleaned of old foods, grease and dust. Storage shelves and areas around air vents also need to be cleaned. Lights needed in back storage room and storage room next to manager’s office. Damaged ceiling tiles needed to be replaced. Damaged baseboards needed to be fixed. Light shields were needed on light fixtures.
Sammy’s Stop, 2016 Pine Bark Boulevard in Orange: 92. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Mold and slime were inside the ice machine. Store name and address needed on all bags of ice being sold.
Momma Nero’s Soul Food, 2615 Western Avenue in West Orange: 92. Inspector found eggs and potato salad out of proper temperatures. Paper towels were needed at the handwashing station. Wiping cloths were stored on top of the county. Raw chicken and fish were defrosting inside the handwashing station. Certified food manager certificated was not posted in front of restaurant.
Whataburger, 7241 Interstate 10 East in Orange: 91. Heads of lettuce were stored inside the sink next to dish water and dirty dishes. Floors inside walk-in cooler and outside walk-in cooler needed to be repaired. Inspector found several flies found throughout store. Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned and the system needed to be serviced. Floors, especially under and around eequipment, needed to be cleaned. Storage shelves needed to be cleaned of old foods. Cardinal Snowcone Stand, 810 West Roundbunch Road in Bridge City: 91. Plumbing at three-compartment sink was not connected properly. Hot water was not provided at the two-compartment sink. Containers of syrup were stored on the floor. Inside of cooler anad freezer needed to be cleaned of old foods. Restrooms needed to be cleaned. Walmart Deli, 3115 Edgar Brown Drive in West Orange: 89. Pre-packaged boilds eggs inside the reach-in cooler and on sales floor were not at proper temperatures. All three meat and cheese slicers needed to be cleaned of old foods. Walk-in freezer had build-up of ice along door. Front coolers had water build-up along gaskets. Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned of old grease. Missing floor grout needed to be fixed. Certified food manager certificates needed to be posted in front of the deli.
Sonic Drive In, 1265 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 88. Foods inside the cooler and freezer needed to be dated and covered. Fry scoop was damaged. Floor inside the walk-in cooler was damaged. Inspector found “lots of gnats” inside. Employee cell phone and drink were improperly stored. Employee had a nose ring. Corn dogs were defrosting on top of counter. Storage shevles, Vend-a-Hood, floors and walls needed to be cleaned of old foods. Inspector said “lots of cleaning is required.: Fire suppression system needed to be inspected. Inspector recommended pest management retreatment.
Hushpuppy’s Seafood, 1202 North Main Street in Vidor: 80. Cooked rice was not at proper temperature. Air-conditioner dripping water onto the counter next to gumbo and cooked rice (manager moved food off the counter). Ice scoop was on top of ice machine. Handwashing station did not have water or paper towels. Inspector found several flies and gnats. Food was stored on the floor inside the walk-in freezer. Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned of old grease. Light shields were needed. Floors and walls needed to be cleaned. Damaged ceiling tiles needed to be repaired. Current health inspection report needed to be posted in front of restaurant. Handwashing signs were not posted at handwashing stations. Broken and unused equipment outisde needed to be discarded.
