Orange County Health Inspector James Scales went to schools in February and was handing out good grades. He gave perfect scores to the cafeterias and 12 schools during the last part of February.
During that period, he made 25 inspections with 13 scores of 100. Overall, the food service businesses and restaurants fared well. The lowest score was an 83 and went to JJ Wings and Seafood on MacArthur Drive in Pinehurst.
The only business with a perfect score was the Valero Corner Store, 7253 Interstate 10 East in Orange.
The schools with perfect scores are Orangefield Elementary, Orangefield Junior High, Pine Forest Elementary, Oak Forest Elementary, Vidor Junior High, Vidor High School, Tekoa Academy in Orange, Community Christian School in Orange, St. Mary School in Orange, Bridge City Middle School, Bridge City High School, West Orange-Stark Middle School.
Scales also made a pre-opening inspection at Tee Nah Nah’s Cajun Cooking at the Cardinal Fireworks Stand in Bridge City.

The Jumping Bean, 7174 Highway 87 North in Little Cypress: 98. Restaurant did not have a 2016 food service permit.
California Corn Dog Stand, 795 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 98. Employee drink did not have a lid and straw. Hot dogs were thawing inside a sink of water.
Neches Grocery, 3035 FM 1131 in Vidor: 98. Store did not have 2016 food service permit.
Brookshire Brothers, 1380 North Main Street in Vidor: 96. Dates were needed on foods inside the reach-in freezers. Storage shelves inside the produce walk-in cooler were rusted.
Step-N-Go, 234 South Main Street in Vidor: 95. An ice scoop was on top of the ice machine. Damaged ceiling tiles needed to be replaced. Old washers and dryers were outside and needed to be removed.
Delta Food Mart, 705 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 93. Chemicals were stored above pet foods and plastic utensils. Store did not have 2016 food service permit. Bottled drinks were stored on the floor. Floor tiles were missing inside the walk-in cooler.
Stop-N-Drive, 1510 Texas Avenue in Bridge City. Dates were needed sandwiches and other products in the inside coolers. Store did not have 2016 food service permit. Storage shelves in the walk-in cooler were rusted. Drinks needed to be stored off the floor inside the walk-in cooler.
Freeway Express, 115 East Freeway in Vidor: 92. Foods and sandwiches inside the walk-in cooler needed to be dated. A broken ice scoop was found. The store did not have sinks to wash dishes and needed to replace the sinks that were removed. Light shields were needed inside the walk-in cooler. Restrooms were not working.
Casa Ole, 1015 North Main Street in Vidor: 87. Raw meat and vegetables were stored incorrectly inside the coolers and freezers. Food was still on some cleaned dishes. Floor drain was clogged. Storage shelves were rusted. Inspector found several chipped plates and containers. Areas to the sides and under the fryers and the grills needed to be cleaned. Walls needed to be cleaned. Paint was beginning to come off of walls. Ceiling tiles near most air vents needed to be cleaned of old rust.
JJ Wings and Seafood, 2246 MacArthur Drive in Pinehurst: 83. Raw shrimp was uncovered. Foods needed to be dated. Restaurant did not have 2016 food service permit. Towels were needed at the hand-washing station. Objects at the hand-washing station needed to be moved so employees can wash hands. Drinks were found without lids and draws and were stored improperly. Chemical was found next to food. Food was being stored on the floor. Utensils and knives were wedged between the wall and sink. Cleaning needed to be done inside the reach-in coolers, on the floors and walls. Inspector recommended more general cleaning.
