Tuesday night the City Council in Bridge City called for the municipal election to be held Saturday, May 6. The ballot will include three seats on the council.
Kevin Mott the current Place 1 alderman confirmed he will not be running for re-election. Mott said he did not have any comments concerning his reasons for not seeking another term on the City Council, but he believes there are two good candidates that have filed for the position. City Secretary Sherry Tisdale reported Carl Harbert and Phillip Todora have filed for the Place 1 seat.
The incumbents in the other two places have filed and are currently unopposed. Tammi Fisette in Place 3 and Terri Gauthier in Place 5 are seeking re-election. The deadline to file for a place on the ballot is Friday, February 17. The City Council also approved an agreement to hold the municipal election jointly with the school board election in the Bridge City Independent School District on May 6.
Installation of filters in the water wells of Bridge City has been delayed again. City Manager Jerry Jones indicated the delay was called for by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) because of a change in the chemicals that were to be used in the filters. The city has been delayed seven to ten days to allow TCEQ to review the chemical feeds to be used in the wells. A conference call will be conducted on Thursday between the city, the engineers, and the chemical company to discuss the feeds as well. “Hopefully, we’ll get some news on exactly when we can get this thing kicked off,” Jones predicted.
Bridge City will also need to replace the entire liner on the Romero well of the city’s water system. Jones stated it was hoped that the liner could be patched or only partly replaced, but the liner has become so fragile that the city determined it will be required to replace it entirely. He added the next decision will be how to pay for that repair.
The city manager has also done some inspections of the old police station on Texas Avenue. Jones informed that there are some video cameras that need to be removed from the building. Some minor cleanup and painting may be necessary before the building can be put up for sale.
A public hearing was called for Tuesday, February 21, to discuss continuation of the curfew ordinance for minors in Bridge City. The public hearing will start at 6:00 PM just prior to the regular City Council meeting.
