Orange police Tuesday night arrested a West Orange-Stark High School teacher and coach in connection with driving the car that hit and killed a young mother and daughter.
Detective Captain Cliff Hargrave said 53-year-old Carl Broussard of Vinton, Louisiana, went to the police station at 9:30 p.m. to turn himself in to custody. He is facing two counts of leaving the scene of an accident. Because deaths were involved, the charge is a second degree felony with a punishment of two to 20 years in state prison and a maximum fine of $10,000.
25-year-old Ava Nicole Lewis and her daughter, 6-year-old Lamya Janise Newhouse, were killed a little after 8 Monday night as they were crossing MacArthur Drive. The two had been to the shopping center on the north side of the thoroughfare and were going to the south side. They lived on Broad Street in West Orange, which is off the south side of MacArthur.
Witnesses described a small white car as driving away after hitting the two.
