A 28-year-old man is in the Orange County Jail facing life in prison for seriously injuring his 2 1/2 month-old son by violent shaking.
The baby had to be taken by medical helicopter to Memorial Hermann Children’s Hospital in Houston with brain injuries. He has recovered and is living with his mother and 2-year-old brother with relatives.
A charge of injury to a child, a first degree felony, was filed with the Orange County Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 office against Jeffrey Allen Sanchez. Bond has been set at $250,000.
According to an affidavit of probable cause by Orange County Sheriff’s Investigator Lauren Kemp, Sanchez said he angrily shook the baby violently and then dropped him on the tile floor. He said he was trying to take a nap and the baby would not stop crying.
The affidavit said when the father saw the baby was unresponsive, he called the mother at work and told her something was wrong. After 9-1-1 was called, he told emergency personnel he dropped the baby.
Investigator Kemp in the affidavit said doctors at the Houston children’s hospital said the baby had extensive brain trauma and bleeding inside his head. The doctors said the injuries appeared to be caused by Shaken Baby Syndrome and blunt force trauma.
