To swim, or not to swim will be the question for people in Orange who use the city natatorium. Tuesday, City Manager and Doctor of Philosophy Shawn Oubre told the city council the opening of the pool depends on getting 10 lifeguards.
He said 10 people applied for lifeguard positions and are going through Red Cross training to become certified. The city will need all 10 certified and willing to work in order to open the pool.
Last summer the pool didn’t open because of a lack of lifeguards. Oubre said a minimum of 10 are needed to meet regulations. The city can’t operate the pool without lifeguards because of the legal liability.
Public Works Director Jim Wolf, who oversees the natatorium, presented the council with a contract for Community Christian School to use the pool on Tuesdays from 1 to 2 p.m. The school will pay the city a base fee of $20 per hour plus $1 per person per session.
Wolf said the plans are to open the pool from June 6 through August 17. The hours will include adult swim and exercise times from 6 to 8 a.m.
After Wolf mentioned the hours, Oubre said the opening is not definite. “As of today, we do not have certified lifeguards,” he said.
