Responding to the complaint of a citizen during a city council meeting a couple months ago Bridge City is looking to do work on the drainage of Sunnyside. Heavy rain causes the water to flood Sunnyside. The pipes under several of the culverts on the street need to be replaced.
City Manager Jerry Jones gave the estimate of the cost to replace the pipes and repair the culverts at about $8600 for the whole job. Jones said five driveways would be broken up to allow city crews to lay the new 15-inch pipes. Jones added Bridge City will do most of the labor with its own equipment and personnel, but that could add another two to three thousand dollars to the cost of the repairs. When asked by the Council how much the project will improve the situation at Sunnyside on a scale of 1 to 10, Jones replied about a 3.
Mayor Kirk Roccaforte indicated there were multiple reasons why the City Council took no action this week on Jones’ estimate of the repairs recommended for Sunnyside. Roccaforte believed the main reason was the way they were talking the council members questioned whether it was going to be worth what needed to be done for the results it would give residents and the city. The mayor also acknowledged the inconvenience for the residents who would have their driveways blocked for about a week.
Progress is being made on construction of the new Bridge City Police Station. City Manager Jones provided an update of the construction. Jones stated shingles have started going up, the big beams on the front of the station are finished, electricians are working, air conditioning units are expected to start going in this week, brick could start being laid within a week, and the exterior doors will probably go up in another week or so. The city manager is pleased that the progress of construction is ahead of schedule and where the contractors are right now.
The new Bridge City Police station will be behind the Raceway gas station between Lake Street and Rachal one block from Texas Avenue. The current police station’s location on Texas Avenue has proven to be inconvenient for patrol cars to respond to calls because of the heavy volume of traffic on the primary street of Bridge City. The new location will have two entrances and exits on to either Rachal or Lake. -Dan Perrine, KOGT-
