Orange County Health Inspector James Scales gave perfect scores to three businesses dealing with food during the first part of September. During that time, he made 20 inspections. Five received no scores. Two were church soup kitchens, First Presbyterian and Mount Sinai Baptist Church, both in Orange. The churches had no violations but were not scored. Three businesses received pre-opening inspections.
Old Orange Cafe was the only restaurant making a 100. Other perfect scores went to the Little Flock Daycare in Little Cypress and the Cardinal Dollar Express on Texas Avenue in Bridge City.
The lowest score was a 70 and went to the Sun Wok on Texas Avenue in Bridge City. Scales reported that he found food at unsafe temperatures and food stored uncovered in coolers and freezers. In addition, he found ants, roach feces and spider webs inside the kitchen and dining room.

Cakes Plus, 7763 Lamurel Will Road in Mauriceville: 97. Storage shelves needed to be cleaned.
Sonic Drive In, 2805 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 97. Area around the fryers, grill and hot-hold station needed to be cleaned of grease. Inspector pointed out that major improvements have been made.
El Mexicano Meat Market, 2455 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 96. Foods needed to be labeled and dated.
Vidor Superette, 5645 North Main Street in Vidor: 96. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Sandwiches inside coolers needed to be dated.
Dairy Queen, 780 North Main Street in Vidor: 96. Air vents were dripping water above the fry station and needed to be fixed.
Moz Grill/Crawdad’s, 12099 FM 1442 in Orange: 94. Several gnats and flies were found. The area around the fryers and grill needed to be cleaned of old foods. More general cleaning was needed throughout grill. Air vents needed to be cleaned and repaired. Cutting boards needed to be replaced.
McDonald’s, 2311 Highway 62 in McLewis: 94. Several flies were found throughout the store. Floors, ceilings and equipment needed to be cleaned of old foods. Mold and slime were at the drink dispensers. More general cleaning was needed throughout the restaurant. Floor tiles needed to be re-grouted.
Roberts Steakhouse, 3720 West Park Avenue in Pinehurst: 94. Pipes at the sinks inside the wash room were dripping water with water on the floor around the sinks. Vents above fryers and grill needed to be cleaned of old grease. The inside of the reach-in coolers and freezers needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Star Stop/In and Out, 100 West Freeway in Vidor: 93. Inspector pulled several expired foods, some back to 2014. Storage shelves needed to be cleaned of dust and dirt.
Crawdad’s Store, 12099 FM 1442 in Orange: 90. Sandwiches inside the coolers needed to be dated. Several gnats were at the drink stations. Mold was on the drink dispensers. The floor inside the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned.
Star Stop, 1402 16th Street in Orange: 89. The store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. No hot water was inside the restroom. The ice scoop was on top of the box. Floors inside the storage rooms needed to be cleaned of dirt. Missing ceiling tiles needed to be replaced inside the storage room. Drinks needed to be stored off the floor.
Sun Wok, 2429 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 70. Eggrolls were at unsafe temperatures. Employee drink was inside the cooler. All foods in the coolers and freezers needed to be labeled and dated. Beef and shrimp were defrosting inside of buckets of water. Towels were needed at the hand-washing station. Ants, roach feces and spider webs were inside the kitchen and dining room. Floors and walls, plus the inside and outside of storage containers needed to be cleaned. Lights were not working and needed repairs. Inspector suggested more daily cleaning and contacting a pest management company.
