Orange County Health Inspector James Scales continues to find problems at some food businesses with problems including dead roaches, spider webs and mold. Also, some places are given demerits for lacking proper hand-washing supplies.
Scales went to 21 places having food during the latter part of March with six getting perfect scores.
The lowest was a 75 and went to the Stop-N-Shop at 111 Green Avenue in Orange. The McDonald’s in Vidor had a 78 with problems including cooked eggs stored at room temperature and dirty utensils. The inspector made return visits to check on progress correcting the problems.
The Dairy Queen on 16th Street in Orange was the only business with a perfect score. School cafeterias earned the other 100s. They were Little Cypress Intermediate School, Community Christian School, West Orange-Stark Middle School. St. Mary School, and North Early Learning Center.
The Stop-N-Shop had a score of 75. At the time of the initial inspection, the store’s restroom was out of order and the inspector ordered it to be repaired immediately. The store also did not have hot water inside.
Scales also found “lots of spider webs and dead insects” throughout the store. He pulled several expired foods from shelves and reported dates were needed on products inside the reach-in coolers. In addition, the store needed its name and address on bags of ice being sold and the current health inspection report was not posted in front of the store.
Other demerits were given for the ice scoop being on top of the ice machine, drinks stored on the floor in the back storage room, and construction material and trash sitting outside. The floors needed to be cleaned and thermometers were needed inside the coolers. Shelves inside the reach-in cooler and in the storage room needed to be cleaned.
The McDonald’s at 705 North Main Street in Vidor had a 78. Demerits included times not being kept on vegetables and pies. Heavy buildup was inside the ice cream machine and the reach-in coolers needed to be sealed properly. Dates were needed on products and the restaurant was using plastic cups to scoop ice instead of ice scoops. Employee drinks were throughout the kitchen and prep area. Scales found grease build-up in fryers and on the Vent-a-Hood. The floors, walls and storage areas needed to be cleaned of old foods and organized.
In addition, the McDonald’s needed paper towels at hand-washing stations including the restroom and the kitchen hand-washing station. The store did not post its current health inspection and hand-washing signs were needed.
