The president of the board that oversees the volunteer fire department for Mauriceville and McLewis said services in the community have not been affected by recent resignations. Spencer Fuss is the president of the Orange County Emergency Services District No. 4, which oversees fire department. He said the district’s two fire stations have volunteers ready if needed.
In the first week of September, the ESD 4 board of directors demoted David Roberts as chief. Roberts had been the chief of the McLewis Volunteer Fire Department before the ESD board combined McLewis and Mauriceville volunteer fire departments into one department with a north station and a south station.
Fuss said he has had four official letters of resignations from firefighters since Roberts was demoted. He said he has heard by word of mouth that others have verbally resigned, but they have not submitted letters.
James Journeay is currently the fire chief. He had served as the Mauriceville Volunteer Fire Department when the ESD had two departments.
Fuss said he is “getting applications every day” for volunteers to the department. Anyone interested should contact either Fuss or Journeay.
